We live in an era of communication. We are immersed in it. Some would even argue that we are drowned by it! What role could light play in making communication more effective yet less invasive? What is the role that lighting designers would be required to play in aiding communication that is relevant, and how would we be able to work collaboratively with our clients and other designers to build a new way of thinking about the communicative qualities of light?
Tapio Rosenius, CEO, Skandal Technologies, lighting designer and design thinker, has been grappling with these questions for a long time and has found methods to answer these questions in some of his projects over the years. As a proponent of “Ambient Communication” he has combined his learning with practical aspects of visual communication in the built environment. He is a pioneer in the use of biomimetic and responsive lighting control in a built environment and continues to develop systems, masterplans, visions and technologies related to this field.
Katia Kolovea, nominated into the coveted 40-under-40 list for her energetic approach to spreading the message of good lighting, has also done extensive research into the topic of light and communication. The resulting conversation was insightful and probing. In a multi-faceted approach to understanding the power of light in communicating ideas and emotions, the two designers also discuss challenges they have faced and solutions they have come up with. Negotiating artful communication is a result of careful dialogue with a clear end focus and holds huge potential in a technology driven world.
