Lexus India announces the call for entries for the Lexus Design Award India 2024 (LDAI), the seventh edition of the award and a unique platform for design professionals to showcase their talent and creativity. Entries will be accepted beginning the 20th of July till the 30th of September 2023.
The objective of the Lexus Design Award India is to acknowledge and honour exceptional works of industrial design crafted by talented Indian designers. This prestigious award seeks to commend designs that proactively address the future challenges of society and envision captivating and inventive approaches to foster a sustainable future, while effortlessly augmenting the overall happiness of individuals. LDAI over the years, has witnessed many interesting designs that will create a better tomorrow for society, some of which have been compiled into a limited-edition coffee table book.
With LDAI, designers will be guided by the three pivotal design principles - Anticipate, Innovate and Captivate to express their innovative thinking and originality that anticipates challenges faced by society and imagine engaging & innovative solutions that will contribute to a sustainable future, thereby seamlessly enhancing the happiness of all.
Jury Members -
Dr. Anupama Kundoo
Kundoo is an internationally renowned architect, author, and researcher with a focus on social issues and sustainable architecture. She has received numerous awards and recognition for her work, including the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture and the RIBA Charles Jencks Award. Kundoo’s projects reflect her commitment to creating meaningful spaces that address people’s needs. She has extensive experience working, researching, and teaching in different cultural contexts around the world.
Hailed as the ‘Karl Lagerfeld of India’ by famous British stylist Isabella Blow, Tahiliani is an international fashion designer with several lines, including prêt-a-porter, diffusion, and accessories, his most acclaimed being couture bridal wear. Having held runway shows around the world from London to Milan, he is a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India, the governing body of the country’s official fashion week.
In 1987, he opened India’s first multi-designer boutique, Ensemble, heralding a fashion and retail revolution in India. Tahiliani extended his design aesthete to the field of architecture and interior design with boutique hotels, holiday homes, and institutions across the country. Tahiliani’s venture creates luxurious living spaces across interior, landscape, or architecture design, with key assignments of restoration and redevelopment.
Subodh Gupta
Subodh Gupta is one of India’s most renowned contemporary artists, with works exhibited in prestigious art galleries and cultural institutions throughout the world. Known for transforming everyday objects into large-scale installations that engage with his childhood, his home country, and universal themes encompassing migration, globalization, and the cosmos, his sculptures comprise objects that evoke either the exotic or the quotidian, depending on the viewer’s perspective. He was awarded the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Letters by the French Government in 2013 and has had solo shows and retrospectives in various locations.
Vinu Daniel
Principal architect and founder of award-winning studio Wallmakers, Vinu Daniel completed his B. Arch from The College of Engineering, Trivandrum in 2005, and proceeded to work with the Auroville Earth Institute for the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) Post-Tsunami construction.Driven by a philosophy of ‘What should we build?’ rather than ‘Should we build?’, Daniel’s projects feature a poetic materiality of brick, mud, scrap, and waste, manifested within thought-provoking structures. Daniel has garnered global recognition for his cost-effective, sustainable works, including winning three editions of the Design that Educates Award, a nomination for the Brick Award 2022, and the Royal Academy of Arts Dorfman Award 2022.
Giri Venkatesh
Giri Venkatesh is the Vice President for Area Operations and the Lexus Asia Pacific Division Executive Marketing Coordinator. He drives the brand’s marketing strategy in the region and this role, is also the guardian of the brand’s development through product planning and training. His involvement with Lexus began in 2003 and over the years has been involved in the planning and launch of the brand across the region. Part of this also includes being closely associated with Lexus Design Awards India and being involved in the program development team back in 2017.
Lexus Design Award India 2024 will invite entries from the following two main categories & six subcategories:
Conceptual Category:
Original ideas awaiting materialization. Explore architecture, design, and crafts with diverse functions and shapes. Abstract or practical concepts that can transform into reality.Established Category:
1. Industrial design:Address evolving needs through inclusive, human-centric, and eco-friendly design. Focus on mass-produced works like digital applications, household goods, and transportation tools.
2. Textile design:
Embrace innovative textile designs, including weaves, prints, and patterns. Highlight functionality, cultural contexts, craftsmanship, and emotion.
3. Furniture design:
Recognize designers shifting paradigms. Enhance function, form, and ergonomics with applied art and sciences. Celebrate the skill of furniture placement.
4. Built environment:
Celebrate creativity, technical expertise, and social impact in urban design and architecture. Showcase imaginative spaces, infrastructure, and sustainable development.
5. Tech design:
Disrupt design with innovative technology. Focus on solution-driven entries, considering components, assembly, sustainability, and transformative potential.
- The winner will be provided with a grant of INR 5 lakhs to further honor their design
- The most innovative entries in the Conceptual category will get the opportunity to participate in a development workshop held by luminaires from design and will get the opportunity to showcase their work on the global platform (Lexus Design Award 2024).
- LDAI 2024 Conceptual Category winners will be supported by Lexus India in developing and producing their prototypes and will get the chance to experience Lexus Design Event at Milan Design Week 2024.
