Galleria Matria presents Time Lapse, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Spanish photographer Xan Padrón. Through his acclaimed Time Lapse project, the artist captures urban life with a patient and reflective approach, transforming the anonymous flow of passersby into collective portraits that reveal the identity of a city.A professional musician for over a decade before fully dedicating himself to photography, Xan Padrón translates the rhythm of the city into images, creating compositions in which each passerby becomes a note on an urban staff. The connection between his musical background and his photographic research is evident in his collages, where time and space intertwine in visual harmonies.
His works not only capture the ephemeral but also invite the viewer to reflect on their own perception of time and space. Unaware protagonists, passersby become witnesses to a collective story in which the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary.
Time Lapse invites us to slow down and observe: through Padrón’s images, time ceases to be an unstoppable flow and turns into a sequence of moments capable of revealing stories, connections, and rhythms. Public space thus becomes a stage for silent encounters, a spontaneous and universal choreography.
XAN PADRÓN
Born in Ourense, Spain, in 1969, Xan Padrón discovered photography through his grandfather, a photojournalist, and developed a keen narrative sensibility under the influence of his father, a journalist. After years of experience as a professional musician, he embarked on a photographic journey that led him to exhibit at prestigious institutions such as the United Nations Headquarters and the Pfizer Building in New York, as well as at major art fairs like Photo LA, Art on Paper NYC, and The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art in London, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
His work has been featured in international publications such as Die Zeit Magazine (Germany), New England Review (NER), PRISM International (Canada), and Photo World Magazine (China). Additionally, his images have appeared on the cover of the 11th edition of the anthology Race, Class and Gender in the United States (MacMillan, 2020) and in the sociology volume Personal Networks (Cambridge University Press, 2021).
The Time Lapse series was selected for the Art on Link (#ArtOnLink) program by the City of New York (LinkNYC, CityBridge 2020), displaying his sociological portraits on over 1,700 digital screens throughout the city. Furthermore, his works were featured on the cover of Saatchi Art’s Fall 2019 catalog, further cementing his impact on the contemporary photography scene.
