AKKA Project is thrilled to unveil an upcoming art exhibition featuring the remarkable works of Osaru Obaseki, an accomplished mixed-media artist hailing from Lagos, Nigeria. Obaseki's artistic expressions delve deep into materiality, historical narratives, cultural identities, societal constructs, and the intricate dynamics of colonialism and post-colonialism. She adeptly wields sand and acrylics to weave together two distinct civilizations — the ancient and the contemporary. Furthermore, Obaseki's expertise extends to the creation of bronze sculptures, meticulously fashioned using the age-old tradition of bronze casting and the revered lost wax method. Her works resonate with an interplay of time, texture, and transformation, unveiling layers of both personal and collective histories.
Drawing inspiration from her native environment, Obaseki shares, "The essence of using sand as one of the major mediums in my work process is drawn from my stay in Benin City. One thing has remained a constant — the red earth. I have taken this earth (sand) and infused it into my contemporary style of art while documenting new realities and juxtaposing them against oral histories of the past which live through my imagination." Osaru Obaseki's artistic exploration encapsulates the symbiotic relationship between humanity, nature, and the passage of time. Her creations serve as a visual ode to the resilience and evolution of culture, manifested through intricate textures and intricate narratives.
