David Gill Gallery announces an exhibition of exciting new works by the visionary US-based designer Sebastian Errazuriz. Inspired by classical antiquity and created using cutting edge technology and AI, Errazuriz is continuing his explorations in design, creating a body of inspiring new work that belongs to no specific time or place.
For Errazuriz, sculptures from ancient history become intriguing figurative supports for his functional contemporary designs. A collection, that includes shelving, lamps, mirrors and a series of tables, is created from a series of beautifully carved bas-relief friezes, discovered in archaeological sites. The world of classical antiquity becomes the source material for dramatic panels that front consoles and cabinets, heads that transform into tables, mirrors and shelves and curated artifacts that decorate tables. It is an act of both appropriation and deconstruction, and a way for the designer to meld the human figure into a work of furniture, crafting pieces that are both utilitarian and yet still deeply artistic.
In a career spanning over three decades, Errazuriz’s work bridges the gap between art and design, creating functional objects, destined to be touched and used, as well as carrying a strong artistic narrative and intellectual threads. Deeply engaged with the ideas of what and why we collect, the designer’s interpretation of antiquity humourously critiques the era of the Grand Tour when a 17th or 18th century young gentleman’s trip to Europe was not complete without the acquisition of classical souvenirs (often of dubious authenticity).
