Kristina Dam Studio’s Split café table and stool proffer an architectural simplicity

Kristina Dam Studio presents Split, a new series of café tables and stools that brings architectural simplicity to contemporary design for hospitality and residential spaces. Launched last month, the series of cafe tables and stools is built around a distinctive construction principle: “three bent steel plates meeting at the foot, carrying a surface in either stainless steel or solid oak”, Kristina Dam Studio explains.

Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, the products from the Split series reflect the Copenhagen-based studio’s persistent exploration of form, function and material through their signature sculptural minimalism. The pared-back form of the furniture gives the pieces an architectural presence while allowing them to adapt to various environments.

For Kristina Dam, the founder and creative director of the eponymous design studio, the collection grew naturally from their increasing work with contract clients in the hospitality sector. “As we work more and more with contract clients in the restaurant and café space, I wanted to design a table that feels just as right in the city's finest restaurants as it does in a small kitchen with room for a single table,” she says.

The combination of steel and wood as materials is central to the two furniture items in the series—the Split Café Table and Stool, described by the studio as 'seating with architectural rhythm'—balancing industrial design with the warmth and tactility of natural materials. “I've always loved the combination of steel and wood—and multifunctionality is deeply rooted in our DNA. The stool moving from seat to side table to pedestal is exactly that idea in its purest form," Dam notes.
