Giovanni Ozzola explores inner infinity in Il cielo dentro at Galleria Continua

Galleria Continua presents Il cielo dentro (The Sky Within), a solo exhibition by Italian artist Giovanni Ozzola, on view from March 12 – May 9, 2026, at the gallery’s Rome location. The art exhibition reflects the idea that infinity is not solely an external phenomenon but also an internal condition. “It is the inevitable pull of the horizon that brings a fertile contradiction to the forefront: infinity not as distance, but as an expanding inner space. Not an escape from reality, but a perceptual condition—the possibility of feeling connected to the whole while remaining inside a body, inside a skull, inside a bunker,” Ozzola shares in Galleria Continua’s official release.

Rather than presenting a linear narrative, Il cielo dentro (The Sky Within) unfolds as a continuous tension between interior and exterior realms. Visitors encounter a series of works where the visible meets the imaginable. Central to the exhibition is Bunkers, a body of photographs examining abandoned military structures. These semi-derelict spaces are reimagined through Ozzola’s lens. Openings in the concrete walls frame luminous horizons of sea and sky, creating a striking dialogue between confinement and vastness. “The images do not merely depict wartime ruins; they establish a visual relationship between the enclosed space and the luminous horizon that opens beyond the slits, between the opaque density of the interior and the distant sky or sea,” the art gallery explains.

Ozzola doesn’t practice traditional documentary photography. Instead, his works emerge from repeated encounters with these sites over many years, forming what he describes as an ‘experience’ rather than a systematic study. Throughout the exhibition, traces of human presence—marks, gestures and fragmentary symbols—accumulate like layers of sediment.

A starry sky installation introduces another dimension, echoing a previous work shown at Rome’s Quadriennale d’Arte. Here, the distinction between interior and exterior dissolves entirely, suggesting a shared cosmic substance between walls and stars. In works such as Pillars of Hercules, the contemporary artist brings together the microscopic and the infinite, bridging science and spirituality. The exhibition also includes Appunti senza parole (Notes Without Words), a sculptural piece composed of layered photographic fragments: “Print proofs and visual fragments preserved over time are accumulated, layered, and bound by hand until they form a three-dimensional presence endowed with thickness, weight, and volume,” the contemporary art gallery explains.

“Ozzola’s works do not describe places; they activate them. Each image traces a possible route, directs the gaze, suggests a direction. They accumulate traces as time does, layering signs, memories and presences that belong not only to the depicted space but also to those who move through it,” Galleria Continua concludes.
