Southern Guild inaugurates their Tribeca space with Ballad of the Peacock

Southern Guild gallery has inaugurated its permanent New York gallery in Tribeca with Ballad of the Peacock, a solo exhibition by South Africa-based painter Mmangaliso Nzuza. The presentation, on view from April 23 – May 16, 2026, "marks the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery and his first in the United States, introducing American audiences to one of the most distinctive emerging voices in contemporary figurative painting,” Southern Guild notes in an official release.

Based in Cape Town, the African artist builds his compositions around recurring figures who move through open landscapes, domestic interiors and fashion-inspired settings. “Drawing on influences ranging from Western art history and contemporary Black portraiture to fashion photography and textile design, Nzuza’s paintings explore the politics of looking, identity and self-fashioning. Often inspired by the fashion magazines that fill his studio, patterned garments operate as expressive ‘second skins’, transforming clothing into a language of performance, adornment and personal mythology,” the art gallery explains.

Across Ballad of the Peacock, Nzuza repeatedly returns to a character who reappears in different guises. Sometimes solitary, sometimes in a group, its identity seems to shift from image to image without ever fully settling. “Despite exuding ease, the character is insistent, structuring the viewer’s reading of the scenography through its unyielding presence,” the contemporary art gallery notes.

The works in Ballad of the Peacock reflect a consistent engagement with fashion and textile patterning. The idea of ‘peacocking’—dressing to be seen—runs through the art exhibition as a guiding thread. For example, paintings such as the Song of the Second Skin “depict three men with their bellies comfortably out, dressed in identical brown pinstriped pants and set against a bare mountainscape,” the gallery explains. In Mosaic, a dense cluster of figures is distinguished primarily through variations in pattern and colour, with vertical stripes, geometric motifs and solid blocks of tone used to separate and define each body within the group.

Several works engage with familiar art historical tropes, particularly the reclining figure. In one painting, a woman lies on the ground in a black dress, her posture relaxed but self-aware, her attention directed away from the viewer. While the composition recalls earlier European painting traditions, the contemporary artist shifts the context by removing the sense of confrontation typically associated with such images. “Nzuza’s reclining figure is declarative in both poise and title, joining a lineage of Black painters who continue to intervene in and disturb typical dynamics of the gaze, while also pulling compositional cues from contemporary fashion photography,” the gallery elaborates.

Ballad of the Peacock ultimately brings together questions of identity, visibility and self-styling through painting. “Whether in lush Nongoma, set against stark, less particular backdrops, or posed in stylish interiors, Nzuza’s repeated, well-defined and self-fashioned character is always at home, simultaneously offering itself for—and masking itself from—the gaze,” Southern Guild concludes.
