Shilpa is an academic, critical theorist and social scientist. An alumnus of JNU New Delhi (MA) and TISS Mumbai (PhD), she has been working for three decades in the education, publishing, and voluntary sectors. At the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, she heads and teaches in the Interdisciplinary Design Studies faculty, the PhD Programme and Liberal Arts Studies. Her research and teaching interests and published work include areas such as Indian art, crafts traditions and aesthetics, history of design, art, Indian story telling traditions, cultural studies, disability studies and public health. She is the editor and author of the book, 50 Years of the National Institute of Design: 1961-2011 and co-editor of Indian Crafts in a Globalising World.
