Draga & Aurel presents LAVA, a new series of dining and coffee tables that expands its Transparency Matters collection. The furniture design series continues the duo's exploration of material experimentation, bringing together two signature elements of their practice: epoxy resin and concrete. “Essential geometries and contrasting textures define the new family of tables,” Draga & Aurel note in the official release.
At the heart of the product design collection is a cylindrical tabletop that embodies years of research the Italian design studio poured into thick epoxy resin, with its clean surfaces. “Glossy, reflective and intensely transparent, its surface captures and amplifies light, creating a sense of depth and shifting chromatic vibrations within the surrounding space,” the designer duo notes.
Anchoring the contemporary design’s composition is a conical concrete base, whose tactile quality provides a counterbalance to the transparency of the top. “Its raw, textured effect is achieved through a distinctive surface treatment: erosion caused by contact with sea salt gives the concrete a vivid, irregular and deeply sensory quality,” they add.
LAVA represents the latest chapter in Draga Obradovic and Aurel K. Basedow’s ongoing investigation into the relationship between resin and concrete, following previous works including Golia, Cala and Cava. “We love working with these two materials: they are so different, yet they resemble each other; they are unpredictable and wild, a bit like us,” they mention in the official release.
Every LAVA table is handcrafted in the contemporary designers' atelier in Como, Italy, where experimentation, craftsmanship and artistic research converge. “It is here that the resin pieces of the Transparency Matters collection are created, alongside the studio’s creative restoration practice, which transforms vintage furniture into unique design pieces for the Heritage collection,” the official release concludes.
