Kristina Dam Studio redesigns the Hirschsprung Collection Museum store

Kristina Dam Studio has redesigned the Hirschsprung Collection Museum store in Copenhagen, creating a contemporary retail destination that reflects the art museum's heritage while introducing a new customer experience. “Kristina Dam Studio's Japanese Cabinet, Foldable Shelf and Collector Table were carefully selected to create a functional yet refined display system. Blending timeless materials with a minimalist aesthetic, the pieces complement the museum's curated atmosphere while allowing the products to take centre stage,” the Denmark-based design studio notes in an official release.

Tasked with reimagining the museum store, the studio approached the project as more than a traditional gift shop redesign. The ambition was to create an international retail store experience centred on craftsmanship, design and thoughtful curation. “Kristina Dam Studio reimagined the space as a sequence of four distinct rooms, each offering its own experience and creating a new customer flow that guides visitors from arrival and contemplation to selection and farewell,” the contemporary design studio notes.

The result is a cohesive environment where art books, lifestyle objects and handmade pieces are presented in a calm setting. “The interior design draws inspiration from the quiet elegance of Vilhelm Hammershøi's interior paintings. A thoughtful combination of brushed steel shelving and warm wooden elements creates a balance between structure and softness,” the studio notes.

Several of the studio's signature furniture pieces make up the interiors. The Japanese Cabinet is used for the library wall, the Planar Shelf frames smaller objects while the Foldable Floor Shelf provides a flexible and sculptural platform. “At the centre of the store stands the Collector Table, gathering the presentation and giving the room its gravitational point, while Collector Chairs invite visitors to pause and engage. Steel and wood meet in a balanced expression,” Kristina Dam studio mentions.
