Michael Young's expressive Sakura Ring is inspired by Japanese cherry blossoms

British designer Michael Young unveils the Sakura Ring, his new sculptural design
that blends centuries-old symbolism with cutting-edge jewellery. The piece represents a culmination of craftsmanship and personal storytelling. "When Michael set out to create a ring, his goal was to move beyond a simple single-stone band and to make a visually moving three-dimensional sculpture for the hand. There is a deeply expressive, emotional concept that embodies several techniques, stemming from a depth of knowledge gained over time," reads the official press release.

At the heart of the product design lies a motif that has shaped Young's career since its beginnings in Tokyo: Sakura, Japan's iconic cherry blossoms. Long celebrated for their beauty and cultural significance, the blossoms symbolise the fleeting nature of life and themes of renewal and optimism. Their ties to the Samurai code of Bushido—honour, discipline and fearlessness—further elevate their meaning. In Japanese history, falling petals have represented the brief, brilliant life of the warrior.

Five of these blossoms are cast in 18-carat gold, forming the central composition of the jewellery design. A diamond anchors the arrangement, surrounded by blossoms set not with traditional diamonds but with custom-cut sapphires and emeralds. "Each stone matches the colours of [Young's] children's eyes, making the ring a permanent, wearable portrait of a family," the press release reveals.

Sakura Ring builds on Michael Young Studio's ongoing Craft x Tech explorations. As with the earlier Blossom Links project, the Sakura form was sculpted digitally and 3D-printed in castable wax before being realised through the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. The result is a seamless blend of contemporary design and traditional craft. "It is a testament to how modern design can retain profound, personal meaning," the official release reads.

To meet increasing interest, the studio based in Hong Kong has now established a dedicated division for bespoke Sakura-inspired jewellery commissions, marking a new chapter in its fusion of heritage, emotion and technology.
