Pietro Franceschini moulds rattan into the fluid and minimalist forms of Rotella

Architect and designer Pietro Franceschini unveils his first rattan furniture collection titled Rotella, realised through a close and fruitful collaboration with the Indonesian manufacturer CVP. Crafted by highly skilled local artisans in Indonesia, the collection reflects a shared commitment to quality, innovation and respect for traditional craftsmanship.

Established in 1987, CVP is a seasoned manufacturer of indoor and outdoor furniture design based in Indonesia with vast experience working with various materials such as wood, metals, rattan, Lloyd Loom, synthetic wicker, rope and more. Their broad range of product designs and expertise has allowed them to be actively involved in a variety of projects domestically and internationally.

Rotella reinterprets rattan, using a two-centimetre black pipe that coils into minimalist and fluid forms inspired by the iconic 90s Haribo liquorice wheel. Comprising a chair design, a coffee table, a bench and two side tables, the collection balances a playful touch with formal rigour. A nod to midcentury design—particularly Joe Colombo's Nastro Chair—grounds the pieces in a lineage of modernist innovation while asserting a bold, graphic identity of their own.

The Italian designer presented an immersive installation that juxtaposes materiality and atmosphere within the ruins of a historic structure for Jia CURATED 2025, an esteemed design event in Bali, Indonesia, which was held from August 14 – 18, 2025. A custom gravel floor set the foundation, evoking a tactile, grounded presence. Resting on top, minimalist steel platforms showcased the Rotella pieces, creating a sharp contrast between the organic and the industrial. Long, sheer drapes hung throughout the space, forming layered backdrops that shifted with light and breeze. These elements interacted with the architecture, softening its rawness while framing the works in a suspended, almost dreamlike composition. The result was a quiet yet striking dialogue between heritage, craftsmanship and contemporary design.
