BHEED
This Week From The Editor

We celebrate gathering until it gathers too much. A public becomes a 'bheed'—Hindi for crowd—when it stops behaving like an unquestioning audience. Bheed is witness and friction; celebration and dissent; sedition and possibility. Most regimes develop an allergy to unscripted crowds, peaceful or otherwise.

'May the odds be ever in your favor'

The difference between civic participation and a mob lies in how we choose to read this mass. In this dispatch, we understand the commons as many forms of participation worth protecting. A panel at the UIA World Congress reflected on the evolving role of architecture awards to champion collaboration over the

solitary genius. Artist Benoît Maubrey's speaker sculptures turn public art into community, speaking back to public space. 'Second Nature' at NMACC brings spectators, artists and galleries on the same plane through static artworks framed as participatory experiences.

Orwell warned that some are more equal than others. Which is why some crowds become congregations. Others, almost overnight, become bheed. Control is heavy and nights are long. But remarkably, most remember where they belong.
