Gallery FUMI presents By Which We Live, a group exhibition that brings together ten multidisciplinary women artists and designers. On view from April 30 – June 20, 2026, the design exhibition examines the relationship between objects, atmosphere and the ways people inhabit space. It begins with a shared question posed to each participant: how do you live? “Working across functional objects and sculptural works, each maker approaches this question from a perspective unique to their practice. For some, living may be expressed through play, softness, intimacy or ritual. For others, it may emerge through tension, memory, protection or transformation,” Gallery FUMI notes.
Among the highlights at the contemporary design exhibition is a new iteration of Emma Witter’s Ocean Mirror series, featuring vintage mirror frames encrusted with British rock oyster shells, electroformed copper wire, pearlescent paint and crystal resin. “For Witter, making is not separate from living but deeply intertwined with it. The materials she works with are gathered from her own cooking and salvaged environment, filed into an archive and returned to repeatedly in her work,” the design gallery explains.
Saelia Aparicio contributes new glazed ceramic lamps and figurative stools crafted from wood and finished in pastel tones, with delicate Chinese-ink illustrations. “Across these works, Aparicio casts the body with a sense of the intimate and the humorous. The figures rendered here show us what it is to share a space with something that is at once decorative and alive,” the London-based gallery explains.
Charlotte Kingsnorth reimagines modernist design references through her La Jambe Table and La Jambe Stool, inspired by Alvar Aalto’s iconic Stool 60 and E60 table. Combining onyx, leather and pastel faux fur, the product design transforms familiar forms into tactile and theatrical objects, while Corinna Dehn’s contribution reflects on the experience of nursing and the altered perception of time that accompanies caregiving. Using the Armadillo series' characteristic shingles, developed with Lukas Wegwerth, she creates a mounted shelf design that feels simultaneously protective and contemplative.
Also featured are new works from Bernadette Deddens of Study O Portable, who extends the studio’s Rubber Rocks series with a carved orb inspired by personal keepsakes, and Amsterdam-based artist Bregje Sliepenbeek, whose suspended mobiles and wall-mounted pieces transform industrial metals into fluid compositions.
The exhibition also revisits an important work from the Bench Mould series by Sarah van Gameren of Glithero. Originally developed with Tim Simpson for Gallery FUMI in 2010, the plaster bench on view is a rare red-pigmented edition rediscovered in conversation with collector Sasha von Meister in 2025. Other participating contemporary artists and designers include Stine Bidstrup, Leora Honeyman, Sofie Lachaert and Jie Wu.
“Together, this exhibition reflects the many ways our inner lives project into the spaces we inhabit. By Which We Live becomes both a theme and an open question. It asks what it means to build an environment around oneself, and how art and design can influence not only how a space looks, but how it feels, functions and is experienced,” Gallery FUMI concludes.
