Often touted as the most diverse, comprehensive and expansive design district activated during Milan Design Week, Brera returns this year from April 20 – 26, 2026, with a rich calendar of events as part of Fuorisalone. The Brera Design District is perhaps the most culturally layered neighbourhood in Milan, Italy, hosting art galleries, restaurants, cultural institutions, design showrooms, boutiques and concept stores.
The historic neighbourhood, characterised by narrow streets, ornate facades, quaint balconies and inner courtyards, eagerly hosts contemporary design activations during the design festival every year. Although Brera remains the most extensive design district in terms of the showcases platformed here, its tightly knit urban morphology ensures that the geographical stretch remains compact, offering an intimate and rich experience. Within its quarters, heritage and innovation dialogue with each other.
For Milan Design Week 2026, Brera prepares to become a syncretic urban laboratory dedicated to design and experimentation, inclusive of the processes and materials that shape them. This sits in line with Fuorisalone’s theme this year, Be the Project, which ‘invites a view of design not only as a formal result or final product, but also as a cultural process, an attitude, and a responsibility, in building relationships between people, places and communities.” This theme will manifest in the 17th edition of Brera Design Week this year, via myriad interpretations across installations, exhibitions, product design launches, brand showcases and more. The district will host 217 permanent showrooms, including nine new openings and over 190 more investors, sponsors and temporary exhibitors.
As a media partner, STIR divulges the specificities of and showcases within the Brera Design District, ahead of the annual design week:
Milanese illustrator Chiara Ghigliazza was commissioned to create the visual identity for the district this year. She created graphics of scenes as viewed during her daily tram rides in Milan, by observing passengers and urban scenes from the tram window and taking visual notes in a sketchbook. These are transformed into vibrant scenes using bright and bold colours. The motion design studio Alkanoids has brought these visuals to life, creating a small theatre of life with elegant animations and dedicated sound design.
“Riding the tram has become a daily ritual, because observing the landscape passing by the window helps me clear my mind and let my imagination wander. The tram makes me feel a bit like a tourist in my own city; it allows me to see familiar places from a different angle, rediscovering them anew,” she shares, explaining how the illustration showcases the Italian city from a familiar yet new perspective.
Kitchen brand Valcucine presents CRAFTING FORWARD, an exhibition curated by Zanellato/Bortotto Studio showcasing the kitchen as an evolving ecosystem. Rooted in craftsmanship and driven by experimentation, this project explores the convergence of industrial innovation and contemporary craft, with a customisable, intelligent output.
Watch brand Grand Seiko’s The Nature of Time is a series of installations that delve into the deep connection between time and nature in Japanese culture. The project has been realised in collaboration with Atsushi Shindo, Shingo Abe and Takakuni Kawahara.
glo™, a tobacco heating products brand, returns to Palazzo Moscova this year with an installation by research centre Numero Cromatico. Designed as an immersive space, the installation integrates chromatic vibrations, inviting visitors to experience space as something to be crossed and remembered.
Italian visual communication and 3D tech brand Stark presents Albori, a design installation that demonstrates the creative process as a journey, taking audiences through sound, light and matter. The three spaces are emblematic of listening to a space, witnessing the emergence of an idea, and finally arriving at the design.
Surfaces brand Arpa®, along with materials brands FENIX®, Formica®, Homapal® and Getacore®, presents ArchiThoughts–ArchiTouchs, the third chapter of the exhibition project curated by Federica Sala and hosted at FENIX Scenario. The design exhibition brings together six international architecture studios, namely Marion Mailander, Parasite 2.0, RedDuo Studio, STORAGEMILANO, Studio GGSV and ZIMMER, sitting and displaying their works within an installation designed by the architecture studio (AB)NORMAL.
Visitors to the design event will also get a chance to witness a celebration of joy and optimism through the immersive installation Chasing the Sun by Veuve Clicquot and Yinka Ilori.
Another immersive showcase is outdoor furniture brand Nardi’s Lumière, a capsule collection of padded elements that envelop their MAXIMO modular sofa in a new sensory experience that utilises light to augment the experience.
With Materia 2.0 Celebrates 10 Years of Moodboards, material brand Materia 2.0 showcases a curated selection of tactile moodboards that trace a decade of research across materials, textures and colours.
Blooming Imperfections – Relationships in Progress is a show featuring installations, participatory experiences and moments of reflection, in Portanuova. It explores human connections as an evolving process. An interactive artist trail, a temporary restaurant and photo corners complete the experience as a place of encounter, reflection and discovery.
High-end built-in appliance brands SKS and LG present Feeding the Future, an interactive journey where visitors are invited to discover how domestic technologies and AI can support more conscious food consumption and how this can help build a more sustainable future.
La città delle Idee by Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) honours Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera’s 150th anniversary during the design festival. The installation is a modular 3D-printed structure that reimagines urban space by reversing solids and voids. It forms a flexible, reusable environment designed to encourage social interaction and dialogue. “Città delle Idee is not just an installation, but a dynamic laboratory for the living of the future,” shares Mario Cucinella, the Italian architect and founder of MCA.
Designer Sara Ricciardi, in collaboration with American Express, presents Serotonin: the chemistry of happiness, an immersive installation set within the evocative Loggiato of the Pinacoteca di Brera. Open to the public, the project explores the universal connection between beauty and happiness, translating the scientific concept of the ‘happiness hormone’ into an engaging sensory journey.
At the house museum of artist Renzo Bongiovanni Radice in Brera, kitchen brand SieMatic presents the kitchen as a space for identity, creativity and inspiration. Through engaging settings, its four styles, namely Pure, Urban, Classic and Mondial, blend to explore new design possibilities and customisation.
Florim, a porcelain and ceramic tiles and slab brand, explores Milan’s identity through balance, restraint and continuity in PIAZZA CASTELLO Milano gentile. Designed with Nicola Gallizia and Matteo Thun, the project turns surfaces into expressive architectural elements.
Arts & Crafts & Design, a new collaborative showcase, unites four key players in Milan's craft and design scene: Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d'Arte with Doppia Firma, the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity & Craftsmanship with Homo Faber Fellowship, Serapian with The Secrets of Mestieri D’Arte and Creative Academy with Treasure Island. The intent is the proliferation of dynamic discourse during Milan Design Week this year.
At the Italian institution Piccolo Teatro Studio Melato, GROHE creates an immersive experience centred on water as a source of wellbeing, relaxation and renewal. As the press release mentions, “Engage your senses and slow the perception of time to fully immerse in water as a transformative element that cleanses, rejuvenates and relaxes.”
Lastly, When Apricots Blossom, set up by The Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation and curated by architect Kulapat Yantrasast, features new works by 12 designers, including Bethan Laura Wood, Bobir Klichev, Didi NG Wing Yin, Fernando Laposse, Glithero, Yantrasast, Marcin Rusak, Nifemi Marcus-Bello, Sanne Visser, Sevara Haydarova Donazzan, Studio CoPain and Raw-Edges. In what is an immersive takeover of the historic Palazzo Citterio in Brera, these contemporary designers present works that platform Uzbek craft and the culture and ecology of the Aral Sea region.
