Mayfair Design District 2026 turns its focus to What Matters Now

Since its inception in 2017, the Mayfair Design District (MDD) has converged some of the most prominent and emerging global creators from disciplines spanning art, design, craftsmanship and hospitality to one of London’s most affluent neighbourhoods. Bordered by iconic landmarks including Marble Arch and Hyde Park, the design district returns from September 12 – November 1, 2026, for its most ‘disruptive’ edition yet. Co-founded by James Malcolm Green and Anne-Laure Pingreoun, MDD positions itself as a cultural movement rather than a temporary pop-up, with a thriving creative ecosystem that showcases collectible design year-round. Now the third-largest cultural district within the London Design Festival, the upcoming 10th edition—under the curatorial theme What Matters Now—further cements its status as a global design destination, inviting discussion on ‘what we choose to preserve and what we carry forward’. The programme coincides with London Fashion Week, PAD London, Frieze and LAPADA, underscoring its cross-disciplinary ambition and reach.

In an age when sustained focus is treated as a scarce commodity, What Matters Now asks its design-discerning audience to turn its focus towards relevance, attention and preservation. “Across Mayfair, galleries, design destinations, global brands and cultural spaces will present a curated programme of exhibitions, installations, product launches, talks, new commissions and creative encounters, transforming the neighbourhood into a platform for contemporary cultural dialogue,” the official release states.

There’s a distinct bid for intersectionality in this year’s selection of events, with hospitality initiatives such as that of the restaurant Ambassador’s Clubhouse, which will spotlight its collection of contemporary South Asian art, in addition to an array of collaborations with brands such as Salvatori, Lalique and Stoneline UK. The district’s highlights include Charles Burnand Gallery’s inaugural exhibition Under Wraps; BADLANDS by Christopher Kurtz at the Sarah Myerscough Gallery; the London debut of collectible design studio Romani House and Lyon & Turnbull’s More is More, a rare retrospective of British visual artist Peter Chang’s creative universe.

Charles Burnand Gallery, a contemporary gallery specialising in collectible design and art, will mark the inauguration of its permanent Mayfair location with Under Wraps, an exhibition that will feature newly commissioned and recent works by international artists and designers including Kyeok Kim, Jan Waterston, Studio Furthermore and Marc Fish. Thematically, the exhibition focuses on the unseen: select objects on display will be partially hidden from view or gradually unveiled, immersing viewers in the slow and surprising process of discovery. The show will be on view from September 12, 2026 – January 9, 2027.

Another notable exhibition at MDD will be American sculptor and furniture designer Christopher Kurtz’s BADLANDS atthe Sarah Myerscough Gallery. Running from September 18 – November 7, 2026, the ‘career-spanning survey’ of Kurtz’s cross-disciplinary practice references the artist’s origins in the South Dakota Badlands. Central to the exhibition’s offerings is an immersive installation of 30,000 wooden ‘skipping stones’ that are stacked on top of each other and spread throughout the space. Each piece is borne of the off-cuts of Kurtz’s design pieces, forming a poignant testimony to 20 years’ worth of work in his studio.

Collectible design studio Romani Home will be presenting While I Sat to Make Life, a six-piece furniturecollection by Dubai-based Jordanian studio founder and designer Haya Jarrar. Running through September 12 – 21, 2026, the series is inspired by Jarrar’s experience of pregnancy and early motherhood and is presented in the form of a ‘sculptural diary’ that explores vulnerability and resilience. The collection, showing in 14A Hay Hill, will mark the studio’s London debut.

It is fitting to include a major retrospective in a district steeped in centuries-long history, and Lyon & Turnbull’s More is More: The Magical World of Peter Chang will offer just that, and more. The exhibition—developed in partnership with the Estate of Peter Chang—is anticipated to offer a rare and thorough insight into the evolution of the pioneering British jewellery artist’s practice. The presentation will include archival material spanning Chang’s expansive oeuvre, including jewellery, sculptures, drawings and prints, and will run from September 14 – 19, 2026.

MDD will also include a landmark exhibition of the Italian design brand Salvatori with Founded in Gold, a celebration of the company’s 80th anniversary and its innovations in natural stone. Other notable activations include the global stone specialist, Stoneline, which will also be launching its new Mayfair gallery during the festival with Alchemy of Perception, a week-long programme including maker sessions, material workshops and the presentation of bespoke objects.

At the Mayfair Design District 2026, the provocative curatorial theme What Matters Now unfolds across a myriad of perspectives, bringing personal and universal questions into focus through innovations in craftsmanship and technology. The design district’s sheer breadth and simultaneity—of creators both established and emerging, and of practices time-honoured and pathbreaking—set the stage for its place as central to contemporary cultural dialogue at the London Design Festival.
