Cult Gaia's newest flagship store, located in the heart of Miami's Design District, embodies the perfect fusion of heritage, architecture, and artistry. Designed by the acclaimed New York-based firm Sugarhouse, the 1502 sq ft retail space is a visual experience offering visitors an immersive journey through mythological beauty and inspiration.
Drawing upon Cult Gaia's founder Jasmin Larian Hekmat's Persian roots and the brand's ethos, Sugarhouse embarked on a journey to create a space that seamlessly blends tradition with contemporary aesthetics. The designers, Jess and Jonathan Nahon were inspired by temple architecture and historical archetypes to design a structure that defies convention while paying homage to both the brand and the surrounding landscape.
The store's elaborate exterior immediately captures attention with its A-Frame structure, a departure from the flat architecture typical of Miami's Design District. Adorned with a mesmerising 1800-piece Tree of Life tile mural by artist Michael Chandler, the facade is a work of art in its own right.
Each tile is intricately woven with symbols that are significant to Hekmat, bringing the mythic Garden of Eden to the forefront. Among these symbols, the depiction of pomegranates pays homage to her grandfather, evoking childhood memories of him nurturing these fruits in his garden. Chandler's meticulous hand-painted ceramic mural, influenced by ancient Asian textiles and Persian ceramics, breathes life into the storefront, depicting a tree adorned with flowers, leaves, and mythical creatures.
Reflecting on his creative process, Chandler shares, "The hand-painted Cult Gaia facade began like most trees—with a small seed in the form of an email inquiry. With some Zoom calls and a few emails, the seeds took root and over the next several months, were painted into their full glory, one tile at a time."
Upon stepping through the arched central door, visitors are welcomed with a motto deeply rooted in Hekmat's family values: "May the doors of the world always be open to you." This mantra, echoing her grandmother's wisdom and welcoming spirit, sets the tone for the sensory journey that lies ahead. "The narrative of Cult Gaia's evolution, from the inception of crafting flower crowns to the establishment of our Miami store, is a testament to the journey of creativity and passion," shares Hekmat. "This particular location stands out for its distinct identity and the depth of connection it embodies to our foundational ethos. It's a space where the essence of our roots and the inspiration from the Garden of Eden are not just represented but vividly come to life."
The interior design unfolds into three primary sections, each meticulously designed to enhance the shopping experience while evoking a sense of wonder and serenity.
The first room, adorned with the creamy hues of Bianco Avorio limestone and Bianco Santa Caterina travertine, invites visitors to explore Cult Gaia's latest creations, which are displayed on unlacquered brass rods reminiscent of the brand's jewellery. Custom biomorphic wall mirrors by New Vernacular Studio add a touch of whimsy to the space, reflecting the interplay of light and texture.
Moving further into the store, visitors encounter a central dressing area crafted from 100 individually chiselled sandstone blocks evocative of rock-cut cave temples. These structures provide privacy while showcasing merchandise within illuminated niches, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics.
The retail store’s design is punctuated by two domes in the primary rooms, each opening to a seven-foot-wide frameless oculus that floods the space with natural light. Drawing inspiration from the Pantheon, these architectural elements symbolise Cult Gaia's belief that everyone is a goddess of earth, fostering a sense of connection and empowerment.
Underneath the domes, visitors are greeted by towering sculptures that further enrich the sensory experience. Central to the store's aesthetic and spirit is a breathtaking 12-foot sculpture of a woman's abstract figure, crafted by Hekmat's mother, artist Angela Larian. This piece not only celebrates her unwavering support and inspiration but also stands as a symbol of matriarchy and womanhood, fueling the creative essence of Cult Gaia.
Sugarhouse's visionary approach to design, coupled with Chandler's masterful artistry, has transformed Cult Gaia's Miami flagship store into more than just a retail space—it's a sanctuary where tradition, creativity, and beauty converge. As visitors inundate themselves with this architectural masterpiece, they are reminded that fashion is not merely about garments but can be integrated as a celebration of art, culture, and self-expression.
