At Milan Design Week 2025, ongoing from April 8 - 13, 2025, Euroluce returns with a rich array of expositions, showcases, talks, workshops and engagements pertaining to the subject of lighting design. Euroluce, a biennial event first held in 1976, is an international lighting exhibition that 'narrates the evolution of light in the domestic space, sparking research and innovation and reflection on the design culture in this particular field'. With light taking on an increasingly central role in a hyper-connected world that now proactively exists beyond day hours, it is imperative to deliberate upon the subjects of sustainability and people’s wellbeing in tandem with lighting.
Appending this thought, an excerpt from the press release highlights, "These days the work of a lighting designer not only embraces technological evolution but also philosophical reflection around light, in order to come up with new concepts that will change the way lighting devices are designed in the future." These explorations are exemplified by the wide range of designs—ranging from the latest outdoor, indoor, interior, industrial, theatrical and events lighting devices to lighting devices for the hospital sector, for special uses such as lighting systems, light sources and software for lighting technologies—exhibited at the design fair.
STIR highlights a few engaging lighting outputs at the design festival this year.
At this year’s Euroluce exhibition, the organisers launch the first edition of The Euroluce International Lighting Forum, scheduled to take place on April 10 and 11. This central event at Euroluce, directed by Annalisa Rosso, in collaboration with APIL, is designed to stimulate the exchange of ideas and the promotion of innovation in the lighting industry, with six masterclasses, two round tables and two workshops taking place in The Forest of Space Arena designed by the Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. These will be heralded under Light for Life. Light for Spaces.
The talks scheduled for April 10, organised under the theme Light for Life, comprised various talks, a roundtable event and a workshop featuring the likes of solar designer Marjan van Aubel, Italian botanist and writer Stefano Mancuso, American artist Robert Wilson, dpa lighting consultants partner Nicholas Belfield, lighting designer Rogier van der Heide, lighting strategy consultant and international expert on light and wellness Shelley James, researcher Manuel Spitschan, astronomer Piero Benvenuti and architect Adrien de Lassence, among others. These events are designed to address the subject of artificial lighting influencing individuals biologically and psychologically.
On the other hand, Light for Spaces, scheduled for April 11, features a masterclass by Japanese lighting designer Kaoru Mende; talks by artist and light sculptor Patrick Rimoux, artist Lonneke Gordijn; a roundtable discussion amongst architect and lighting designer Susanna Antico, lighting designer Hervé Descottes, MMAS Lighting co-founder Mariel Fuentes, British anthropologist Timothy Ingold, architect Carla Wilkins and a workshop with international lighting artist and designer A.J. Weissbard. Talks on Day 2 are curated to discuss innovative lighting solutions that can tell stories, speak about cultures and add meaning and value to the architecture and spaces.
British artist and stage designer Es Devlin’s kinetic installation Library of Light is the flagship installation for Euroluce 2025. The luminous kinetic sculpture, stationed at the 17th century Cortile d'Onore building in Milan, Italy, is designed as a rotating, walkable space, inviting public engagement with the Library of Light. The installation exemplifies the potential of light in appending dynamic participatory designs.
TOOY, known for their innovative and sophisticated lighting products, bring new collections designed by Fabio Fantolino Studio, Duccio Maria Gambi and Studio Archea to Euroluce 2025. While Fantolino’s Bolina is a spherical lamp design defined by clean lines and curves, Gambi’s Igor is defined by abstract yet proportionate dimensions alternating as hanging sculptures. TOOY’s booth, on the other hand, is designed and curated by Studiopepe 'as an abstract architecture with pure geometries used as partitions that fit together to generate a succession of spaces’.
dixpari design is a practice that creates unique backlit lamps that alternate as luminous sculptures. Their Alone collection, a series of backlit table lamps on display in Milan, is a sculptural design that is enhanced with the usage of light.
Czech Republic-based crystal manufacturer Preciosa’s presentations for Euroluce 2025 include a new lighting collection Crystal Links and a visualisation tool called Preciosa Signature Design Generator. The former is a lighting concept informed by the structure and fluidity of urban landscapes and the geometric precision of modern architecture. Preciosa Signature Design Generator, on the other hand, is an innovative product generator that enhances the lighting configuration process through automation technology. The generator allows designers and architects to make quick modifications in just a few seconds, helping clients visualise different lighting design options from Preciosa’s Signature Designs.
British designer Lee Broom’s Cascade lighting collection, created for Lladró, debuts at Euroluce 2025. The collection showcases a novel approach to porcelain lighting by melding the brand’s characteristic craftsmanship with Broom’s contemporary vision. Inspired by traditional paper lanterns, Cascade celebrates the cultural and material roots of these iconic forms. The collection features three distinct silhouettes of porcelain pendant lamps that are achieved by shifting and switching different elements in their vertical configuration.
Slamp’s showcase at Euroluce encapsulates a series of products that can emotionally enhance the scenography of spaces. Adriano Rachele’s Bang features 10 pentagonal arms of varying lengths extending from the centre, radiating light through the cuts in the diffuser. Studio Fuksas’s Charlotte outdoor collection, on the other hand, features a honeycomb pattern that creates ever-changing, hypnotic perspectives and Miguel Arruda’s Nuvem is an innovative modular system that can be used as wall decoration, shading element, building facade and more.
Australian designers Studio Truly Truly, in collaboration with luxury lighting brand Rakumba, launch Big Glow in Milan as part of the exhibition the Culture of Light, across two locations—The Big Glow Espresso Lounge at Fiera Milano and the Valcucine showroom in the Brera Design District. Representing a novel take on the classic glowing sphere lighting archetype, the lamps are made using Australian wool and plant-derived compostable fibre.
Australian design studio Articolo Studios reveals three collections in Milan. From technologically driven task lights to textured cast glass pendants and hand-crafted leather lounge seats, Articolo’s Euroluce exhibition punctuates the studio’s growth from decorative interior lighting to furniture design and now adjustable performance decorative lighting.
Davide Groppi cites lightness and invention as the ingredients of their latest collection. Each piece is designed to discreetly blend in with its surroundings. The collection features recessed and ceiling-mounted solutions and track and wall-mounted spotlights.
Some other practices showcasing at the design exhibition include Aqua Creations, Artemide, Astro Lighting Ltd, Axolight, B.lux, Barovier & Toso, Bomma, DelightFULL, Estiluz, FerroLuce, Flos, Foscarini, Ingo Maurer, Lambert & Fils, Lasvit, Lodes, Luceplan, Marset, Oluce, Sammode and Vibia, among others.
