For Architecture and Design Film Festival's (ADFF) South Asian debut in Mumbai, India, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) will witness, in addition to reel manifestations, various real creations and interactive discourses, all curated to grant an ethereal and cinematic experience. Amongst the tangible provisions at the film festival are 10 pavilions installed within the JSW Pavilion Park. These are conceived by various multidisciplinary creatives in response to the overarching theme, Frames of Reference. Whilst the theme eschews blunt association with specific subjects, its abstract and open-ended interpretation makes space for myriad and novel designs which emulate both the creator’s style and their interpretation of the theme.
One of the 10 pavilions on display is Conserve by LOCO Design, a Gurugram-based design agency. Conserve is an exploratory pavilion at ADFF:STIR Mumbai that will also mark the launch of Caur, the new sustainable personal accessories brand by LOCO Design. Caur is founded and headed by Parminder Pal Singh and Sukhviner Dhaliwal and deals with taking waste and turning it into something beautiful. With a key focus on sustainability and style, Singh and Dhaliwal aim to transform excess materials and waste into what the founders dub ‘excessories’. Aiming to utilise traditional techniques and skilled artisans for this job, Caur intends to suffuse home decor, leather goods and jewellery with unique stories and references.
“In the last year, after seeing all the devastation that’s been going on across the world, we thought, in whatever small way, we should try and contribute towards making sure that people feel a little more responsible towards Mother Earth. The damage that we have collectively done as mankind has brought us here and in this endeavour to be richer, better, higher, taller and live longer, most of us have forgotten that we have certain responsibilities toward the present and future generations. You want to leave this world a better place,” Singh shares about Caur with STIR. “We sat down a year ago to think about how we could contribute in this direction. So, we started Caur, which is an accessories brand where we would be using various types of waste that we are producing within our factories and giving it a new life. We encourage people from the craft industries to come together with us and collaborate.”
Emulating the vision envisaged by Caur’s founders for their brand, this pavilion design exhibits creative freedom and sustainability. Conserve is crafted using waste from LOCO Design’s factories via an organic process, where the creative intent, designing and making of the pavilion were fluidly and spontaneously determined by the entire team of makers.
This expressive freedom allowed individual team members to take authorship of creative expression under Singh’s guidance. Further, this process of creation allowed the makers—working within manufacturing—to foster a deeper understanding of the waste produced as well as innovative ways of waste management.
“Conserve’s large-scale panelled walls form the basis of the structure and create a series of intimate spaces to walk through,” reads an excerpt from the official release. The monumental presence of the freestanding structure is adept at housing and exhibiting a video story by Singh and Dhaliwal. The film, also titled Conserve, follows Sukhman Dhillion and Ajay Padda through the landscapes of Ladakh. It also features Caur’s first jewellery collection, designed by the brand’s co-founding designer, Harpreet Padam, and inspired by the landscapes and heritage of Ladakh.
