The Brooklyn Tower, designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS Development Group, has reached a significant milestone as its striking façade was completed. Standing tall at over 1,000 feet, The Brooklyn Tower has already made an indelible mark on the New York City skyline, offering a transformative contribution to the heart of Brooklyn. Far more than just another skyscraper, this architectural instance pays homage to Brooklyn's vibrant past while embracing the future with open arms and becoming the first skyscraper in the borough to claim the increasingly coveted 'supertall' status.
New York-based SHoP Architects were clearly inspired by the hexagonal composition and patterning of the historic Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn, which is seamlessly integrated into the building. The hexagonal motif serves as the foundation for a contemporary yet emblematic expression of Art Deco aesthetics and the resulting design of the tower deeply resonates with Brooklyn's rich heritage. The Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn is known for its landmark architecture built in 1908. Aspects of its design have been incorporated into the tower to create a tangible bridge between the past and the future while lending the shiny new skyscraper some earthen character.
The use of materials to create the captivating façade is so much more than merely functional; it's a narrative in itself. At street level, marble columns sit atop black granite pedestals, offering a visual connection to the Dime Savings Bank's historic charm. As one's gaze ascends, the façade gracefully transitions from white marble to blackened stainless steel, deepening in shades towards the apex. The addition of shimmering bronze and copper elements adds an element of intrigue to the tower's surface.
The combination of metals catches the changing light at various hours of the day, making the tower come alive. This dynamic play of colours that evolve with the sun's position sets The Brooklyn Tower apart from its peers on the block. From dawn to dusk, the tower's façade reflects different hues, creating a mesmerising visual spectacle that changes throughout the day. This captivating effect is achieved through a thoughtful arrangement of fluted, cylindrical, and triangular metal shapes that alternate in size, ensuring that The Brooklyn Tower maintains its unique shape, texture, and materiality from every angle.
Beyond its striking exterior, the mixed-use tower formerly called 9 DeKalb offers a harmonious blend of functionality and luxury. Designed by SHoP Architects in collaboration with Krista Ninivaggi of Woods Bagot and Gachot Studios, the tower boasts approximately 550 residences that range from studios to four-bedroom condominium residences and a limited number of penthouses at its crown, offering a unique living experience at the pinnacle of Brooklyn. It also houses over 100,000 square feet (9,300 sqm) of retail space in the Dimes Savings Bank of Brooklyn at its base.
The residential lobby, crafted by Krista Ninivaggi, exudes elegance and tranquillity. Warm, richly layered finishes, arched passageways, and bespoke furnishings create a welcoming atmosphere. The lobby seamlessly integrates geometric patterns from the historic Dime Savings Bank into its design, paying homage to the building's past. Textured wall panelling mirrors the tower's fluted façade design, while bronze surfaces and black and gold detailing on entryways complete the rich materiality of the interior design.
Gachot Studios' design for the residential interiors focuses on the verticality of the architecture, incorporating warm-toned metals and bronze mirrors to bring the luxurious features of the tower's façade inside. The layouts of the residences take full advantage of the breathtaking views that stretch far beyond the city limits. Custom-designed mosaic tile in the bathrooms adds a distinctly urban charm.
The Brooklyn Tower is more than just a skyscraper; it's a bridge, albeit vertical, connecting Brooklyn's rich history with its promising future. The tower's unique design, intricate façade, luxurious interiors, and prime location make it a standout addition to the Brooklyn skyline. As it rises to its full height of 93 stories and over 1,000 feet, The Brooklyn Tower stands as a true contemporary landmark that thoughtfully integrates an existing neighbourhood treasure.
