The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) on Thursday (July 11, 2019) opened entries for the third edition of the RIBA International Awards, the prestigious awards for architecture outside of the UK.
The RIBA International Awards celebrate buildings that exemplify design innovation, embrace sustainable technologies and deliver meaningful social impact. The Grand Jury for the 2020 RIBA International Awards is led by world-renowned multidisciplinary French architect and urban planner, Odile Decq.
RIBA International Awards for Excellence are given to 20 buildings worldwide that stretch the boundaries of architecture and standards of excellence.
–The RIBA International Prize is awarded to the building considered the most outstanding.
–The RIBA International Emerging Architect Prize recognises the talent of individuals who have been practicing for up to 10 years and are making a significant contribution to the field of architecture. The prize is awarded to the future pioneers and luminaries of the profession.
The inaugural RIBA International Prize in 2016 was awarded to Grafton Architects for their university building, UTEC (Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología) in Lima, Peru.
In 2018, the prize was awarded to Aleph Zero and Rosenbaum, for their inspiring new school complex on the edge of the Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil, Children Village.
The RIBA International Awards are subject to a rigorous judging process by a diverse panel of international and regional experts. The four shortlisted projects for the RIBA International Prize are visited by two expert panels, with the Grand Jury visiting in person before selecting a winner. The winner of the RIBA International Prize will be announced in November 2020.
Odile Decq, Chair of the Grand Jury, said, “The RIBA International Prize has an incredibly important focus - to discover the best architecture for a better life - and I look forward to travelling the world to find a worthy winner.”
Ben Derbyshire, RIBA President, said: “The RIBA International Awards highlight the best new buildings from around the world and the widespread contribution that architecture makes to our daily lives. We’re honoured to have such a distinguished expert panel judging this year’s awards and we encourage those eligible to apply for this opportunity for global recognition.”
Gustavo Utrabo, Co-Founder of Aleph Zero, and winner of the 2018 RIBA International Prize, said: “We were delighted to be awarded the RIBA International Prize and Emerging Architect Prize last year, particularly as the prize’s ethos is in keeping with Aleph Zero’s. It gives us hope to know that awards such as these consider ethics alongside aesthetics; a hope that really is important for all generations.”
The biennial awards are open to any qualified architect in the world for a building outside of the UK, of any size and type of budget.
Entries close on October 31, 2019.
