Situated on the outskirts of Alwar in Rajasthan, India, the Stone House is an example of sustainable living crafted through intelligent design and sustainable architecture. Designed by Alwar-based Sketch Design Studio, this 2,500-square-foot home seamlessly blends modern living with the rustic charm of repurposed stone, creating a set of spaces that transcend the boundaries between inside and outside. This ambiguity of boundaries is inspired by the habitants’ desire for a home that allowed them to reconnect with nature after the confinement that came with the global pandemic.
The interaction between the inside and the outside is facilitated by strategically placed bay windows that capture the breathtaking views surrounding the property. These windows frame the picturesque vistas of the farm and Aravali hills while acting as a portal and seamlessly connecting the residential interior with the natural landscape.
While the house's exterior is designed to blend with the hills of Rajasthan, the interior design pays special attention to details to create a kind and comfortable home for its inhabitants. The walls, both inside and outside, play a crucial role in creating an environment that responds to the climate and the occupants of the house alike. The clay paint finish on the interior walls adds a touch of organic beauty and ensures a toxin-free living space. On the exterior, the stone walls adorned with mud and lime plaster celebrate traditional building techniques and increase thermal comfort while infusing rustic elegance.
Inside, the roof is crafted using the filler slab technique. Inspired by British-Indian architect Laurie Baker, this method involves strategically placing pots within the roof structure to enhance both structural integrity and visual allure. The result is a roof that captivates the eye with its pattern, celebrating the beauty of nature's unpredictability. It also adds depth and richness to the spaces.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, Stone House minimises the use of conventional paints. The choice of Indian white marble for beds and flooring adds a touch of subtle luxury while simultaneously supporting local artisans and helping preserve the rich heritage of craftsmanship. Sourced from the renowned Makrana in Rajasthan, the marble contrasts the rustic clay-painted walls. It adds a layer of sophistication and complexity to the bedrooms.
Arches are a recurring theme throughout the home. Crafted out of lime mortar, the arches paired with the thoughtful and deliberate placement of windows facing north ensures that the spaces are bathed in ample natural light, creating a truly inviting atmosphere.
Another recurring theme through the Stone House is connectivity. In addition to aiding a connection between the inside and the outside, the home’s layout is intentionally designed to promote openness and connectivity. The grand hall, housing the living room, kitchen, and dining space, flow with one another harmoniously. The kitchen counter extends to be a casual dining space, supplementing the formal dining room.
The veranda, positioned strategically near the entry door, serves as a gateway to lush lawns and a flourishing kitchen garden. A spiral staircase connects the veranda to the roof, offering a panoramic view of the farm. Designed for relaxation and comfort, this outdoor space contributes to the overall appeal of the Stone House.
Led by Indian architect Shipra Singhania, Sketch Design Studio has been successful in creating a home that embraces tradition and local heritage and blends it seamlessly with the needs of modern living. The residential design connects its inhabitants to the surrounding nature, offering a tranquil haven amidst the beauty of the Alwar hills. It is a celebration of the power that good design holds, to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functionally efficient.
